Elsick House

Elsick House Wedding Photographer

One of the best things about the North-East of Scotland is its proximity to the sea.

Emma and Al first contacted me about their wedding in Elsick House roughly a year ago. Straight away, a few ideas popped into my head. But I’ll talk about it a little bit later. First let me give you a bit of a briefing about Elsick House.

Elsick House is a historic house in Kincardineshire, northeast Scotland. The house is situated in an agricultural area about two miles from the North Sea near the town of Cammachmore. The Elsick Estate is situated within the Burn of Elsick watershed, which stream traverses the estate property.

Elsick is not a castle but has as much drama and history as any baronial building. It has been in the hands of the Bannerman family since 1367. The family have owned the house and estate continuously, apart from a period after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion, when they found themselves on the wrong side.

Throughout those centuries the house has adapted and altered to the circumstances of the family and its fortunes.  The oldest part of the house dates back to the 13th century. The rooms have hosted many a party and celebration, witnessing battles and entertaining royals.  It is fitting therefore that it has undergone the latest renovation and is now at the centre of entertaining once again. Nowadays, it’s one of the most popular wedding venues in the area, and rightly so.

The wedding day

As mentioned earlier, one of the best things about the North-East of Scotland is its proximity to the sea.

I’ve been lucky enough knowing that Emma and Al are very laid back. From the start I had a feeling they’d be happy to explore the area for some amazing spots for their photos. As amazing as Elsick House is, it would be such a shame to not take advantage of nature nearby and so before the wedding I contacted the two awesome human beings above to let them know of my thoughts about awesome cliffs at Bridge of Muchalls.

Before we fast forward to that though, I simply couldn’t not mention the flawless day we had before heading off for portraits. The bridal preparations were full of laughter, joy and champagne. The groom and his groomsmen were chilling a few rooms away. The groom to be (at that point), received a rather unexpected, but surely most welcome gift of a Breitling watch from the bride. That was just before heading to the marquee to get married, wow! It was a perfect morning, with perfect people and perfect weather.
