Eloping in Scotland has become increasingly popular among couples who want a unique and stress-free wedding experience. As a Scotland elopement photographer, I can personally attest to the beauty and intimacy of getting married in this breathtaking country.

If you love Scotland and the outdoors, or if the idea of a traditional wedding feels overwhelming, eloping might be the perfect choice for you. And as a photographer who has captured countless elopements in Scotland, I’m happy to share my expertise and help you plan the perfect day.

I have condensed elopement planning into 10 steps that will give you a brief guide on what to think about when you are first drafting a to-do list for eloping in Scotland.

Step 1: Decide on a location

One of the most thrilling aspects of getting married in Scotland is choosing the perfect location to exchange your vows. Choose a location that is meaningful to you and fits your vision for your elopement ceremony.

Step 2: Consider the weather

Scotland’s weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared with a backup plan in case of rain or other adverse weather conditions.

Step 3: Obtain the necessary documents

Make sure to gather all necessary documents, such as your passport, birth certificate, and any documents required for marriage in Scotland.

Step 4: Plan your ceremony

Decide on the details of your ceremony, such as the location, the number of guests (if any), and any special touches you want to include. You may want to consider traditional Scottish rituals such as hand-fasting or saying your vows over a wishing stone. Having a dram of local whisky from a quaich (also called a loving cup) is a way many couples eloping to Scotland choose to mark their I Do’s as well! There are so many amazing little touches to choose from that will surely elevate your experience and help you create unforgettable memories.

Step 5: Arrange transportation

Consider how you will get to your elopement location and how you will get around once you are there. If you are planning to elope in the Highlands, it is worth remembering that public transport network is not extensive or reliable. Renting a car is the best way of travelling through rural Scotland.

Step 6: Book accommodations

Consider where you will stay during your elopement trip, whether it’s a hotel, vacation rental, or another type of accommodation. I have an extensive list of places I’ve been to all around Scotland and would be more than happy to assist!

Step 7: Plan your wardrobe

Choose outfits that are appropriate for the location and the weather, and don’t forget to bring layers for added warmth.

Step 8: Hire a photographer

Consider hiring a photographer to capture the special moments of your elopement ceremony. Feel free to contact me now and let’s talk about your plans and desires for your big day!

Depending on your plans, you may need to arrange additional services such as your celebrant, catering, outfits, make up, accessories etc. I regularly work with some of the best elopement suppliers in Scotland and would love to make the introductions.

Step 10: Enjoy your elopement

Above all, remember to relax and enjoy your special day. The goal of eloping is to focus on each other and your love, so take the time to savour every moment.
